Styling Your Kitchen Storage Unit
added 7/3/2007
Storage is the most important section of
a kitchen. Your kitchen should have ample
number of cabinets, cupboards
and a large counter top. It should also have
an array of well arranged drawers and cupboards, below the
counter top to hold all the kitchen commodities with ease.
Remember to make the storage unit always greater than that
required by you at present, because with time it is normal
that your kitchen appliances and utensils will grow in number.
The cabinets and counter tops used in today’s
kitchens give it a classy and fashionable look. The
storage units should compliment your kitchen and make it look
more attractive and fashionable. You can make these units
out of wood, glass or use stains and colors. A contemporary
kitchen can use stainless steel cupboards; counter tops and
cabinets, which will give it a professional sleek look. Stainless
steel cabinetry is highly durable, easy to clean and maintain,
however they are very costly. On the other hand the wooden
cabinets can be a little hampered by the temperature
and humid conditions inside the kitchen. Hence it is advisable
to go for the veneered wood cabinets and counter tops, which
are more resistant to weather conditions.
The wood for the cabinets and the counter tops can be given
gloss, semi gloss or even wax and textured polish. Wood from
various tree have their own deep color and by innovative cutting
styles, the old kitchen cabinets and cupboards can be given
an enormous face lift. Laminate cabinets are absolutely maintenance
free and come in a wide variety of color, finish and texture.
It is the most widely used all over the world. A glass cabinet
reflects the light inside the kitchen and adds a shimmer and
shine to the entire look of the kitchen. It can be used in
between the wooden or steel cabinets, to store the crockery
and beautiful china. Glass cabinets can be easily cleaned,
however should not be handled roughly.
The counter tops though given less importance
by most of us, if not taken proper care of will end up giving
your kitchen a dismal and cramped look. Counter
tops most importantly have to be tough and resistant to all
the dirt, smoke, scratches and wastes that the kitchen generates.
The most common counter tops are the laminated ones, as they
offer a lot of variety in a very low cost. However they are
not effective in withstanding high temperatures and develop
scratches easily, which gives them an old wear out look where
as the wood and butcher block counter tops look better as
they age. The scratches and knife marks that they develop
add more character and warmth to their appeal. They last for
many years, however cleaning and keeping them hygienic might
be a little tougher.
So the next time when you go for a cabinet
remodeling exercise, remember all the choices
you have. It is not only important to focus on the look, but
durability and maintenance should also be given top priority
while purchasing the storage units. The next article will
deal with issues like choosing the right
kitchen sink, kitchen
flooring as well as kitchen
lighting methods.
